Late last week, Cyanogen Inc. confirmed that it would be providing software updates to the OnePlus One units sold in India. Or apparently, that’s what we all thought. The company has just confirmed that it will not be providing software updates for the regional variant of the OnePlus One units sold in India. The company has clarified that only global variant of the OnePlus One imported by Indian users in India would be eligible to get the update. It further states that it is committed to its exclusive partnership in India with Micromax, with whom it will be launching a new Cyanogen powered device under a new YU brand soon. Considering OnePlus co-founder Carl had already announced the news a couple of weeks ago, Cyanogen’s initial press release should have been more clear about the matter since they were just saying the same thing as OnePlus. Instead, the company — knowingly or unknowingly — decided to make a very vague announcement on this issue, which created further confusion among OnePlus users.
OnePlus is currently selling the global variant of the One in India, so these handsets should get software updates from Cyanogen Inc. in the future. It is unclear whether OnePlus will continue selling the global variant of the One in India, or switch to a variant specifically made for India down the line.
